Welcome to the blog

In September 2014, I attended a meeting at the publishers Hodder, along with the other proposed authors of a textbook series to support the new GCSE specifications which would be taught for the first time from September 2016.
For the next 18 months, the author team along with editor David Roger worked on their allocated topics. I worked on a number of chapters for the two textbooks to support the two OCR specifications:
A was titled "Geographical Themes"
B was titled "Geography for Enquiring Minds"
In May 2016, the books were published, and proved very popular. They were endorsed by OCR: a process which involved plenty of re-writing and discussions with the awarding body to ensure that the books were accurate. I also worked on some of the teacher support materials, and sample answers to the questions in the textbooks as well.

Having done all of that, I never got a chance to use the book as I didn't teach GCSE Geography last year, focussing instead on the KS3 development, and the GI Learner project my school is part of.

However, in 2017-18 I will be teaching a Year 10 GCSE group doing OCR 'B' Geography. This blog will share the work and resources that come out from teaching the specification for the first time.

Through the summer, I will start to share my preparation and planning as I start to gear up to teaching the topics in the most in-depth, and with the most imaginative resources to support students.

The blog will also share resources and ideas of other colleagues, particularly my colleague Claire Kyndt, who has been developing an online course to go alongside the taught course.
We will share some ideas for teaching the Topics that we cover in Year 10 (and probably Year 11 as well)
The Year 10 topics are planned to be the following:

Year 10
Michaelmas Term 1
Global Hazards
Michaelmas Term 2
Dynamic Development
Lent Term 1
The UK in the 21st Century
Lent Term 2
Distinctive Landscapes
Summer Term
Coastal Landscapes (including fieldwork in North Norfolk)

Through the first year of teaching the specification, there has been a lot of networking of colleagues, to try to work through some of the issues and teething problems when coming across a specification for the first time, and I will also connect with these networks, and showcase some of the work that has been shared by colleagues in other schools.

There will also be some content for the other topics shared if they become useful or relevant.

Down the right hand side are some links which we find useful when planning. We will add to these as the year progresses. These currently include links to some of the networks that I mentioned above, and there will be more information on the value of joining these as the blog develops.

As the blog header says: I (co)wrote the textbook.... now it's time to teach the textbook...
Well, after the summer holidays anyway...
