We will start the Michaelmas term with the Global Hazards topic.
This explores the nature of hazards, with a definition first, and then move onto some detail on how different hazards impact on people over different timescales, and at different scales. We will be looking at how hazards can be classified, and then moving on to some case studies (which we will return to at various times to test knowledge, but also to add additional layers too, so that one place will be connected with several different topics). This is to avoid ending up with a huge long list of case studies after the two years of the course.
One resource we will use elements from is the British Red Cross resource on the Nepal Earthquake, which was written by Mr. Parkinson. This has been downloaded thousands of times, and received very favourable reviews from those who have used it. You can download your own copy here. It will also be available on Firefly for KES students.
Here's a presentation that was used at the Geographical Association conference earlier in the year, to give you a flavour for the resource, and how useful it is.
This also includes a very useful update on the situation from Lucy Tutton of the British Red Cross.
This will be one of our main case studies....
