I was contacted by Nasreen from the University of Reading to let me know about an event later this year, hosted by the University and made available online to schools.
"I want to tell you about a Climate Education Summit that is taking place at the University of Reading in September. There is comprehensive detail on our website on how schools can get involved, including a video and a lesson plan for primary classes, and also for secondary classes. I hope you are able to take part. It is clear that young people, teachers and experts from across a breadth of subjects are calling for a change in climate education. As one of the world’s leading centres for the study of climate, and with a long history in teacher training, the University of Reading is committed to working with others to create lasting, positive change in this area."
The aim is for the Summit and the climate education action plan to be informed by the voices of others – particularly young people who will be most affected by our changing climate and their teachers, who have a critical role to play in transforming climate education and who should be supported to do so.
Resources for schools
To help start the discussion in schools, we have developed lesson plans and additional suggested activities for use in primary and secondary schools, supported by films from influential climate scientists Professor Ed Hawkins MBE and Dr Ella Gilbert. These, together with climate resources from some of those who are supporting our efforts, are available at reading.ac.uk/planet/climate-education-summit/information-for-schools
Get involved and book a free place at the Climate Education Summit
Speak up. Tell us what you want and need from climate education. What do you want to ask the speakers and invited guests about climate education? What do young people need to know to help us look after our climate? How could our education system better prepare young people for the challenges of a changing climate?
The Summit includes two free, virtual plenary sessions with keynote speakers, which are open to everyone.
To find out more about the event programme, speakers and invited guests; ask a question; share your ideas about what’s needed; and book a free place, go to reading.ac.uk/planet/climate-education-summit
